Human Body Activities – Digestive System
October 23, 2013 Science

We had an amazing time studying the Digestive System.  We did a whole range of hands-on activities from making our own epiglottis  to seeing how the digestive tract works (how nutrients pass through). We made “fake”vomit, measured out the length of the digestive system and more! I also made notebook for the kids as we went through this unit.

Our Digestive System Packet is 100+ pages.

Our Digestive System Packet is 100+pages has worksheets and activities on the following areas:

  • Part I: Digestive System — Mouth
  • Part II: Digestive System — Swallowing, How the epiglottis works
  • Part III: Digestive System — The Digestive Tract
  • Small & Large Intestine Liver, Gall Bladder & Pancreas
  • Nutrition – Fiber & Vitamins
  • This packet also include lapbook pieces for interactive notebooks.

Here are some of the materials that are included in the Digestive System Packet:

When our family studied the Digestive System again, we spent quite a bit of time learning about the small intestine; liver, gall bladder and pancreas; and the large intestine.  I added a dozen new pages to the packet.  You can choose either the fill-in-the-blank notebook pages or use these pages as supplementary readings (with no words missing!).

There is also an entirely new section on fiber and vitamins. This was just an intro for my kids, so as we went over the information, they pasted the information onto the sheet. 🙂 I wanted them to become familiar with the vitamins & why they are important, but didn’t make them memorize this or anything! If your kids are in early elementary (Grades 1-3), I would probably just save this material for later.

Digestive System Worksheets and ActivitiesWe had two books we really used a lot for these units: Human Anatomy Coloring Book (affiliate link) has pages you can print out and color in.

Human-Anatomy-Coloring-BookAnd the The Body Book: Easy-to-Make Hands-on Models That Teach (affiliate link) has really neat models that you can make. We did the joints, bones of the body (see our model here), and some other things, but more about those in those other posts. 🙂

Overview of the Human Body Systems

We started this unit with a fun album called the Human Body Rock (we borrowed it from the library, but it’s available at Amazon) that we listened to as we made our two trips to the doctors last week (for LD’s allergy shots). The first song goes over the body systems in a fun, general way and we used that as a spring-board for talking about all the systems. We reviewed all the Human Body Systems.  Find out more about our Human Body Systems Packet here:

This packet now includes a page about the skin (the body’s largest organ) and a few pages about the organs (and which systems they are a part of):

We also have a Skeletal System Worksheet and Lapbook Packet which is about 90 pages.  Find out more here:

Circulatory System Packet 40+ pages

Recently, we did a new unit on the circulatory system, the heart, blood and more! The kids really enjoyed this unit and by the end really knew how blood is transported around the body (be sure to check out our hands-on activity!!)

Some of the topics covered in this packet include an overview of the circulatory system, the heart, blood vessels (arteries, veins, capillaries), blood flow through the heart, blood transport through the body, blood composition (red and white blood cells, platelets), blood types, cholesterol, and diseases of the circulatory system. Plus, we did a number of hands-on activities and the instructions (with photos) are included in this packet.
