Homeschool Live, Online Classes – More About Me

Hello!
Liesl HomeschoolDenI’m Liesl, a fellow homeschooling Mom with over 25 years of teaching experience! I have homeschooled all three of my kids through high school (almost that is, one daughter has a couple of years to go, but is spending a year studying overseas)!

Before I had kids, I was a classroom teacher. I have my Master’s in History from Brown University. I primarily taught high school classes (both regular and AP history as well as German I & II), but also spent about four years teaching history for the University of Maryland. We lived overseas for over 10 years and I also taught elementary and middle school classes at that time. Plus, I homeschooled all three of my kids and taught informal homeschool classes and ran science club for our friends.

This coming year, I will be offering Online Live Homeschool Classes! These classes will be for Grades 5-6 (ages 10-12); Grades 7-9 (ages 12-15); and Grades 8+ (ages 14+). These online classes will be held on Mondays and Tuesdays (possibly on Thursday); I will be teaching in-person classes here where I live the other days.

Let me explain what courses I am teaching in the Fall of 2024 and why!

Modern History: I have taught all levels of history, but one that I particularly enjoy these days is modern history! I have taught this both on a high school and college level. And of course, I taught my own kids as well! This year I plan to teach a series of 4 modern history classes, WWI, 1920-30s, WWII and the Cold War. The first two will be in the first semester; the second two will be in the second semester.

Ancient History: The history of Ancient China is fascinating! We will cover the geography and history of all of the major Chinese Dynasties starting with the mythical Xia Dynasty through the Tang Dynasty.

Chemistry Courses: I have hosted a number of conference session workshops including one called “Building Your Chemistry Curriculum from Grade 2 through High School.” One consistent comment from other homechool parents was that they were nervous about teaching their kids chemistry and they didn’t feel like they had the background. I have taught my own kids chemistry from early on and just finished teaching my third year of high school chemistry with my youngest. I love teaching chemistry in a hands on way! I thought there might be parents who would opt for a live chemistry class for their kids! By the end of each Chemistry Unit Study Course, I hope that your kids will improve their chemistry vocabulary (understanding terms from atoms, elements and molecules to valence electrons, Alkali Metals, Halogens), basic chemistry topics like using SI units, reading the periodic table, learning to balance equations,  and will feel comfortable building all kinds of chemistry molecule models! I’m so excited for this class I’ve already ordered a heap of molecule kits, a huge periodic table backdrop and started making the chemistry cards we’ll be using both in my online classes and in the live W/F classes I’ll be teaching. Chemistry can be so fun!!

Biology: Cells and Scientific Classification Both of these units are foundational classes for any high school or college biology class. My middle daughter took Biology 101 and Biology 102 as a dual enrollment student this year at our local community college. She said, “Mom, classification was SOOOooo easy for me!”  She knew all the associated terms about cells, prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells and all of the major taxonomic groups for the Animal Kingdom from nematodes and annelids to Platyhelminthes, cnidaria and echinoderms. We covered this in a fun, hands-on way… including studying live critters. We will do the same in the online Scientific Classification class using a digital microscope so that I can share these critter live in class. (That you won’t need to purchase flatworms, beetles or crabs!!).

Intro to Microeconomics: I have a close friend named Donna who is an economist. She has graciously offered to teach an intro to Microeconomics class to grades 11-12 if there is interest! More about this class soon!

As a homeschool Mom, we have loved having some outside classes to supplement my kids’ educational journey. My kids especially loved the shorter courses they did with Bravewriter and with a co-op. They said it felt good to dive deep for a number of weeks, to finish their big project and then to finish it up!

For that reason, I have decided to offer five-week unit studies classes. That gives you as a homeschool family even more flexibility!

Let me answer a few questions before you move on to the next information section.

What is needed for these classes?  You will need a good internet connection to access our Canvas classroom and to join our Zoom classes. There will be PDF learning materials provided which you will need to print out at home and have ready for class time. At times, your student will also need some basic materials such as crayons or colored pencils, pom-poms, a poster board, corn starch, vinegar & baking soda, etc. A list of materials will be given in the syllabus.

What happens if my child is sick and can’t make the live class?  Our class sessions will be recorded and uploaded into the Canvas classroom.

Will I have access to these classes forever? These classes run for 5 weeks and students will no longer have access to the classroom one week after the class ends.

Visit the next section for more information about when and how classes will run, pricing and how to find out more and/or reserve your spot!

LATER THIS SUMMER:

There will be a blue ADD TO CART button button next to each class. I use PayPal to process payments, but you can pay using a credit card (HERE are instructions) via PayPal without creating an account. Once again, you will get a PDF with instructions on how to enter your child’s new Canvas classroom as well as the Class Orientation information). This won’t be until later this summer 2024.

Classrooms will open one week before class begins.

Prerequisites:

Some of the classes follow each other in succession. While they can be taken individually, the content builds on the previous material. This is especially true for the chemistry for middle school classes and the modern history classes.

Other expenses:

Do you need to purchase any of the Packets here in the Homeschool Den store when taking an Online Class? NO! I will be making learning materials specifically for this class. This material will be made available in the Canvas Classroom area as a PDF that you can download and print. This canvas classroom will have different modules and student there will be places for students to participate in online discussion threads as well. For example, before the first day of class, I will have student enter and look around the Canvas Classroom, find the Introductions Section and introduce themselves within the classroom.

Before attending the chemistry classes (all levels) students will need to purchase a Molecule Model Set (affiliate link). You can purchase any model set that has at least 6 (red) oxygens, but the Old Nobby Refill Packet with 118 pieces (affiliate link) will work fine (and is among the most inexpensive options I saw on Amazon at just under $15.

For the Biology: Scientific Classification class, it is strongly suggested that students have access either to a microscope or pocket microscope to look at organisms they find out in nature up close. However, I will be sharing my screen so students will be able to see my live specimens (such as Planaria, Hydra and other organisms) during class.

Students will also have some materials that will need to be printed out at home.

There may be other materials to gather but more information will be provided in the Class Orientation PDF, which you will receive closer to the date of the class.

Please feel free to email me anytime with questions! Liesl@homeschoolden.com
