As I mentioned on Friday, ED has been working on her world geography. She has spent a couple of weeks going over the 7 continents again and working with some Montessori 3-part cards I made for her.
As she sang the 7-continents song (that I mentioned on Friday), she looked at the animal cards for each continent and placed them on the proper continent. Come see our 7 Continents Song you-tube video over at this post… the kids sang through the the song to help someone (overseas) learn the tune!
She did this with a large world map we have:
Another day, she identified and set out the satellite photos we have of the continents. (UPDATE: These appear not to be available anymore. More recently I made a set of map printables that you could use with this activity: Free World Map Printables)
Once she was pretty familiar with the animals on each continent, I brought out the Montessori 3-part cards. I printed out two sets of each and cut out the animals and word labels. She had to match them to the picture.
At the end of the week, I challenged her to match the word to the picture (without the control card)!
We also brought out all our plastic animals and she spent a couple of days sorting those onto the world map as well:
She also did a sticker activity of the world animals. We got a set of 12 from Oriental Trading:

Recently, we did a new Animal Unit. We went into more depth about the characteristics of the 5 animal groups (plus covered the classification of invertebrates, animal tracks, domesticated vs. wild animals and other things.
Plus, there are activities about insects vs. spiders, domesticated vs. wild animals, animal tracks and more!
Types of Animals Worksheet Packet, 30+ Page Packet: My daughter is now in Grade 2 and we are doing a new unit on the types of animals and on the Biosphere (more about that here-Biology Unit – The Biosphere, Biomes, Habitats, Biological Interactions and more. The biology unit is for older elementary). I made a new set of materials for her which we did in December 2015. It covers the 5 types of vertebrates and goes over the main characteristic of each vertebrate group: mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish. It also covers many of the invertebrate groups starting with the differences between insects and spiders. Then going into more detail about some of the other invertebrate groups: crustaceans, mollusks, echinoderms, porifera, and others. Plus, it has a huge section on animal tracks (fun to do in the winter!) and has a bit about food webs, though we’ll really go into depth about that in our unit on the biosphere which we’ll do immediately following this unit.
The Animal Unit packet is well over 30 pages. This is now available for purchase. It is $4.00.
You can find out more about it at this post (which shows in more detail what is included): Animal Unit: Types of Animals Worksheet Packet (30+ Pages)
