The pH Scale – Acids and Bases Worksheets
Chemistry Mini-Unit on the pH Scale, Acids and Bases (25-pages)
The pH of a solution is a number which tells how acidic or basic a solution is. This 25-page chemistry mini-unit covers some of the following
- which numbers on a pH scale indicate that a substance is an acid, base or neutral substance
- using the pH scale to identify different acids and bases,
- comparing the acidity/alkalinity of substances,
- pH indicators (litmus indicators, pH test strips), and
- the logarithmic scale
This new Acids & Bases – pH Scale mini-packet is over 25 pages and includes worksheets for younger (elementary/middle school students) as well as notebook pages that I made for my high school kids.
Here are some of the topics covered in this new pH Scale – Acids and Bases Worksheets Packet:
What is the pH scale? The pH scale is a color-coded scale that shows how acidic or basic a solution is. On the pH scale, anything below the number 7 is considered to be acidic. A substance greater than 7 is considered to be alkaline or basic.
What is an acid or a base? The word acid comes from the Latin word “acer” which literally means sour. Bases have a bitter taste and a soap-like texture.
In pH the term ‘p’ stands for the German word “Potenz”, meaning power or concentration. The term ‘H’ stands for the hydrogen ion, H+.
When the number of H+ ions equals the number of OH– ions, the water is neutral. The range goes from 0 – 14, with 7 being neutral.
The pH scale is a negative logarithmic scale of base ten that measures the potential of a solution to accept protons in the form of hydrogen ions. For example, a solution with pH level 8 is ten times more alkaline than pure water, which has a pH level of 7.

High School Chemistry Units:
$7.99 Ions and Isotopes Chemistry Unit (125 pages) This unit is an introduction to ions (which have fewer or more electrons) and isotopes (which have fewer or more isotopes). This unit should be done after students have completed the Chemistry Unit. (middle school/high school)
$9.99 Organic Chemistry Unit (100+ pages) Organic chemistry is the chemistry of carbon-containing molecules. In this unit, we study many of the organic compounds that include carbon and hydrogen (hydrocarbons), carbon-carbon molecules and more! This unit covers hydrocarbons, functional side groups and the four classes of macromolecules: carbohydrates, proteins, fats and nucleic acids.
