Worksheets, Notebook Pages, Hands-On Activities and More!

This unit includes worksheets and hands-on activities all about the Layers of the Atmosphere. It is well over 50+ pages.

This is a unit we did a couple of times over the years. One year, we did this Layers of the Atmosphere unit after completing the Earth Science Unit. (The kids were in early elementary.) I think that was the year that my youngest daughter did the Where I Live Activities.  She really enjoyed that and it tied in well with this unit. 🙂 Another year, we covered the layers of the atmosphere again before we did our unit on Clouds, Winds and Weather. (My kids were in upper elementary and middle school when we did this again.)

An atmosphere is a layer of gases that surround a planet or other body.  Earth’s atmosphere acts as a protective shield that keeps temperatures within a relatively small range. This blanket of gases is held in place by gravity. The atmosphere extends from the surface outward into space. Scientists divide it into layers based on certain characteristics such as temperature and pressure.

This packet starts with a discussion and activities about Earth’s spheres.  Then it goes into depth about the five layers of the atmosphere:

• Troposphere
• Stratosphere
• Mesosphere
• Thermosphere
• Exosphere

There are a number of activities about objects and phenomenon in the skies. Students will learn about the Sun’s harmful rays — what they are (EM radiation) and how we are kept safe. Finally, this packet touches on satellites and the GPS system.

Here are some of the pages and hands-on activities that are included:

The first activity is an introduction to Earth’s Systems. Earth is a planet with major and minor systems that work together as an integrated system. Earth systems science looks at the interactions between the Earth’s “spheres”— atmosphere, geosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, biosphere, and even the magnetosphere.   This first activity is provided as notebook page that you can read with your students (at the left in the picture below) or as an interactive notebook page.

There are instructions for making this in a half-sheet size if that works better for your family/students.

There are several Layers of the Atmosphere notebook pages, so your students get a firm understanding of how the atmosphere works within Earth’s integrated system. The 2nd picture from the right is a notebook page on the Troposphere.

The Layers of the Atmosphere – Differences in Temperature & Pressure

There are a number of different materials and activities to help your students understand how the Layers of the Atmosphere differ from one another.  There are teacher notes (left) that you can go over with your students.  Students can take notes on the notebook page provided or there is a cut-and-paste activity they can do instead.  Younger kids in your family can use the color-coded notes. The border colors correspond with the colors on the paper.
