German Worksheets for Kids - die Familie the Family

dieFamilie-GermanThe kids have been having a lot of fun building their German vocabulary for family terms such as father, mother, son, daughter, grandma, boy, girl, etc. etc.  The kids learned (reviewed) some of the terms such as

  • die Familie (the family)
  • das  Mädchen (the girl)
  • der Junge (the boy)
  • die Tante (the aunt)
  • der Onkel (the uncle)
  • die Tochter (the daughter)
  • der Sohn (the son)
  • die Schwester (the sister), etc. etc.

I had them each fill in their own family tree… they had to choose names and ages for the people on the chart.  We used that sheet for conversation practice (for the next few weeks!). We cut out the family members and glued them onto Popsicle sticks. We have been using those for conversation practice.

German-for-Kids-FamilyWe have spent the past three or four weeks doing some German conversation practice… We started with “Wer ist das?”  … Who is that?  as we held up one of the people in the family tree. Then we’d answer “Das is die Tante.” “That is the aunt.” At first, I asked the kids questions, but then after a couple of days the kids took turns asking each other (and me) questions.

Once the kids had all the family terms down, we moved on to names and ages.  We would ask… What’s the mother’s name? What is the dad’s name? What is the girl’s name?  — Wie heißt die Mutter? Wie heißt der Vater? Wie heißt das Mädchen?

Wie heißt--Wie alt ist

The kids had also filled in the ages of all the family members, so we practiced asking how old people were…  How old is the daughter? How old is the man? — Wie alt ist die Tochter? Wie alt ist der Mann?

I also had some sheets with one of the family trees labeled with names. The kids had to answer the questions that went with that family tree.

This conversation practice was really good review for LD and DD, but it was especially useful for ED. She has been listening to the stories (passively), but this is the first time she’s really been trying to speak a little in German. 🙂  It’s been a fantastic unit!

One more thing before I go. I thought I would share with you once again the books that we are using in our studies of German.  We have been using German children’s stories called Bobo Siebenschlafer (affiliate link).

BoboSiebenschlafer

We purchased both the book and the audio CD. The stories are cute. They cover topics such as going shopping with Mama, going to the zoo, going to the museum, Bobo is sick, etc.  The stories are about 3 or 4 minutes long. The kids usually listen to one story twice.  Each book has about 8 stories.  The price at Amazon tends to go up and down (I know because I wound up getting two copies of each book to use in our homeschool, so I’ve kept checking back over the past year or so.)  I highly recommend these stories! They are a great way to help students build their German vocabulary. We have four of the Bobo books now, that’s how much we like them!!

That’s about it for now!  Tschüss!

And now more about the German Conversation Card Packet Bundle I mentioned above…

German Conversation Card Sets Bundle: (German Bundle 1)

I have found it difficult to find good German materials and curriculum for kids.  Early on we used a lot of free German worksheets and materials, but then at a certain point the kids were ready for more. See more about the German Curriculum we use now in this post.

I started making conversation cards and sets for the kids as we worked hard on their speaking abilities. We did a lot of role playing!

German Worksheets for Kids - die Familie the FamilyGerman-Family-Vocabulary-dieFamilieWe used this family set *every day* during our conversation practice… to talk about the weather, how we’re feeling, where we’re from, what we’re wearing, what we’re up to and on and on! 🙂
