Layers of the Atmosphere Packet – Worksheets, Notebook Pages and Activities!
Layers of the Atmosphere Packet
Worksheets, Notebook Pages, Hands-On Activities and More!
If you are looking for worksheets and hands-on activities all about the Layers of the Atmosphere, this 50+ page packet may be for you!
An atmosphere is a layer of gases that surround a planet or other body. Earth’s atmosphere acts as a protective shield that keeps temperatures within a relatively small range. This blanket of gases is held in place by gravity. The atmosphere extends from the surface outward into space. Scientists divide it into layers based on certain characteristics such as temperature and pressure.
This packet starts with a discussion and activities about Earth’s spheres. Then it goes into depth about the five layers of the atmosphere:
- Troposphere
- Stratosphere
- Mesosphere
- Thermosphere
- Exosphere
There are a number of activities about objects and phenomenon in the skies. Students will learn about the Sun’s harmful rays — what they are (EM radiation) and how we are kept safe. Finally, this packet touches on satellites and the GPS system.
Let me share some of the pages and hands-on activities that are included:
The first activity is an introduction to Earth’s Systems. Earth is a planet with major and minor systems that work together as an integrated system. Earth systems science looks at the interactions between the Earth’s “spheres”— atmosphere, geosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, biosphere, and even the magnetosphere. This first activity is provided as notebook page that you can read with your students (at the left in the picture below) or as an interactive notebook page.
There are instructions for making this in a half-sheet size if that works better for your family/students.
There are several Layers of the Atmosphere notebook pages, so your students get a firm understanding of how the atmosphere works within Earth’s integrated system. The 2nd picture from the right is a notebook page on the Troposphere.
The Layers of the Atmosphere – Differences in Temperature & Pressure
There are a number of different materials and activities to help your students understand how the Layers of the Atmosphere differ from one another. There are teacher notes (left) that you can go over with your students. Students can take notes on the notebook page provided or there is a cut-and-paste activity they can do instead. Younger kids in your family can use the color-coded notes. The border colors correspond with the colors on the paper.
In this section, students learn about the difference in temperature and how gas molecules differ from layer to layer:
Layers of the Atmosphere – Objects in the Atmosphere
What will you find in each layer? There are several different options for learning in which layers you’ll find various objects or phenomenon in the atmosphere. There are sorting cards (with information on the back of each card) that students can sort:
There are also two cut-and-paste options.

What other subjects do you cover and do you have contact details, website details
We have been homeschooling for more than 10 years, so over the course of that time we have done many of the traditional subjects.
I’m not sure how detailed you want me to be, but for science we’ve gone through many different units in Earth Science, biology, chemistry, physical science (such as energy & electricity/circuits) and the human body systems. This free science checklist has been pretty popular to download and gives you a good example of the kinds of science units we did from K through 8th grade: https://homeschoolden.com/2015/06/02/homeschool-science-unit-checklist-for-elementary-and-middle-school/
For history we’ve studied everything from ancient history through the civil rights movement and the cold war… plus we regularly do geography/current events/modern governments.
You can find many of our science and history resources at these pages:

When the kids were a bit younger, we had a spelling program we loved (http://allaboutlearningpress.net/go.php?id=1121) and we supplemented with a lot of games and activities. We also did grammar most every spring so there are lots of free grammar worksheets on the website.
And, of course, we’ve done math all the way through pre-Calculus so again there are a lot of math resource materials and worksheets available on the blog that I’ve made for the kids. Our multiplication bundle is particularly popular (as it includes more than 20 PDFs)
My kids have learned two foreign languages (we started when they were in elementary), so we have lots of fun activities & worksheets in both German (https://homeschoolden.com/german-store/) and Spanish (https://homeschoolden.com/spanish-store/)
If you want to know more, here are a few pages that might help you get familiar with what we have on the website (because I have more than 2000 posts!!) and will help you find the various packets (as well as free resources) we have available:

I hope that helps. Please let me know if you have any other questions!
