This year I came across a blog that has a wonderful set of Valentine’s resources.  There’s everything from meal planners to preschool and toddler packs; acts of kindness we can do with our kids, coloring sheets, crafts, cards and recipes.  Be sure to go check out Jamerrill’s amazing post over at The Better Mom: Free Valentine’s Day Resources: Last weekend, I shared some of the Valentine’s math sheets and games...

A Shocking Number of Girls Don’t Go to School Worldwide 0

A Shocking Number of Girls Don’t Go to School Worldwide

A few nights ago as I watched the evening news, I heard a statistic that really startled me. The story was about the teen activist who was shot by the Taliban in Pakistan for arguing for girls’ education.  At the end of the segment ABC World News said that 32 million  girls don’t go to school. Wow!  The World Bank Education Statistics Newsletter confirmed that and even had an interesting graphic: It looks...

Capitalization Review

Once again the kids did a quick review sheet to go over capitalization rules.  I wrote out a paragraph about the author of The Hobbit and the kids had to find all the letters that should have been capitalized. I also went over some of the rules of capitalization and had the kids give examples (of a city, state, the name of a lake, and so forth). Although I don’t show...

Beautiful Glass Art Exhibit, Hiking, Making a Long Trip Longer, Skiing

Sometimes it’s enough to get the bags packed and the kids ready; the snack food and water tucked into the car… but there’s not always a big plan when we head off… just a vague notion of where we have to go and who we plan to see. We definitely keep our eyes open for fun activities along the way. That’s how we wound up going into the Smokies, visiting...

Valentine’s Day Bump Game — Division

Can you believe how quickly Valentine’s Day is approaching?  Here’s a game I made to practice division.  These games are free to download. 🙂 To Play: The first player draws a division card.  She determines the answer and places a token on the heart.  If another player has a token on the heart, the player can bump the other player’s token off and replace it with her own token. When...

An Amazing Nature Center (Nashville, TN)

While we were on our road trip we had the opportunity to visit an amazing Nature Center in Nashville, TN with my Sis and her (homeschooling) kids.  It had everything from taxidermy animals to look at, nature drawers to explore, microscopes, bird watching and identification, creative play with puppets, puzzles, costumes, blocks and more.  I wish we had a place like this near us!!   There was a full size...

DD’s Writing Captures Homeschool Life Beautifully! 0

DD’s Writing Captures Homeschool Life Beautifully!

Today in their writing notebooks, the kids had to practice writing something with a dialogue. It didn’t matter what they wrote as long as it had people talking.  DD’s entry made me laugh pretty hard and with her permission I thought I’d share it here. Mom said, “Do your math DD.” DD said, “No, I’m playing.” Mom said, “You better do your math!” Seventeen hours later Mom said, “Bed time DD.”...

Valentine’s Bump Game Doubling Practice 4

Valentine’s Bump Game — Doubling (Addition)

Doubling Practice – Games and Worksheets I made a Valentine’s Day Bump Game for my daughter who is still learning her addition (doubling) facts.  We worked on these and from there we’ll move on doubling higher numbers 7 through 10s.  After that, we’ll work for a while on “what comes after” and then go on to problems like 6+7. This is a game to practice doubling (1+1, 2+2, etc.).  To...

Valentine’s Multiplication Worksheets and Game Boards

Today, I thought I’d first share a couple of the games I made for the kids for Valentine’s Day since it’s quickly approaching.  These games are free to download. 🙂 The first set are multiplication worksheets and game boards to practice the 4s and 6s times tables. **DD only started working on these today (Monday) and I saw there was an error on her paper.  I corrected it and re-posted the...

Aquarium of the Smokies (Gatlinburg, TN)

We spent an amazing afternoon at the Aquarium of the Smokies.  It was really fabulous. There were all different kinds of displays from the Tropical Rain Forest, penguin display, sting ray bay, underwater sea life, whale skeletons, a coral reef, and much more. I’ll try not to overwhelm you with pictures–just putting together a few collages, but it was such a great day it’s been hard whittling down the pictures!!   The...

Road Trip to the Smoky Mountains

One of the fabulous things about being homeschoolers is that we can travel when it suits us.  We often homeschool when other kids are not in school (for example, we often start back to school in early August and don’t take the same breaks, holidays or snow days that other kids in traditional schools take). Then, when the opportunity arises we head off for a family holiday. We actually got...
