Organic Chemistry Unit

New! 100+ Page Introduction to Organic Chemistry Unit

Organic Chemistry Unit - hydrocarbons - macromolecules

During both high school biology and high school chemistry, my kids have done a unit on organic chemistry. This Organic Chemistry Unit includes over 120 pages of notebook pages, worksheets and activity suggestions. All answers are provided!

You can do this! This seemed like such an intimidating topic at first, but we broke it down into understandable chunks! My kids came away with a really good understanding of the basic functional side groups, the four main macromolecules and how all this relates to cell structure.

We started off with an introduction to organic chemistry and then we did some chemistry review. All of the notebook pages come with the full-text (answer) pages as well. (In our family, I would print out the fill-in-the-blank student text for my kids and the full text page for myself as we went over the new material).

Introduction to Organic Chemistry Notebook Pages WorksheetsWe are very visual so there are lots and lots of illustrations included on most every page!! Along the way, my kids built sample molecules of everything from simple hydrocarbons to amino acids! We used this molecular molecule kit. (affiliate link)

What is organic chemistry?

Organic chemistry is the chemistry of carbon-containing molecules. There are roughly 100,000 inorganic compounds, but well over 20 million synthetic and natural organic compounds are known!

In this unit, we study many of the organic compounds that include carbon and hydrogen (hydrocarbons), carbon-carbon molecules and more!

Organic Chemistry Unit

Living things are made of huge molecules called macromolecules, which are built around the element, carbon. By the end of the unit, students will be familiar with the four classes of macromolecules (carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids) and their basic structure and function.

Here are some of the topics we covered in this Organic Chemistry Unit.Organic Chemistry Unit - Worksheets - hydrocarbons macromolecules

  • Introduction to Organic Chemistry
  • Building Molecules (hydrocarbons) – and introducing students to alkanes, alkenes, and alkynes
  • Chemistry Review (ionic, covalent bonds, polar molecules, hydrogen bonds, properties of water)
  • Organic Chemistry and Carbon
  • Organic vs Inorganic Compounds
  • Cellular Biology – introducing the 4 classes of macromolecules

Organic Chemistry Macromolecules Worksheets

  • Carbohydrates
  • Lipids – – Saturated vs Unsaturated Fats
  • Proteins
  • Nucleic Acids
  • Functional Side Groups

Organic Chemistry Notebook Pages

In this packet you will find student pages with fill-in-the-blanks and blank spaces that I created for my kids. Following that page (or those pages) you will find full-text, instructor pages with the answers. Sometimes I do not label them “ANSWER” pages because some families use the full-text versions (and not the student pages). I printed out the student notebook page/s for my kids and the instructor page/s for myself and we went over the material together.

Other pages are worksheets which my kids did for homework. We did a lot of review over the course of this unit (and also I have done this unit several times, with my different kids and added to the packet depending on what needed more review, etc.) so pick and choose what your kids can use. There is an answer page provided for them/you to check their answers.

Molecule Building KitAre there prerequisites for this unit? Be sure that your student has a basic understanding of chemistry before they start this unit. They should be comfortable building molecules; we used this molecular molecule kit during this unit. (affiliate link) Your student should understand valence electrons and should be familiar with Bohr diagrams. You may want to check out our Chemistry Unit if you think they need more background.

Do you need to purchase a textbook or specific curriculum to go with this unit? No, you don’t need to buy another textbook/curriculum. I do give suggestions as to the resources we used along with these notebook pages and worksheets. For example we really like Glencoe Chemistry Matter and Change (affiliate link) and used that a lot throughout high school. For biology, we are using/used Thinkwell’s Biology course. If you are interested you can get 15% off through my referral link: Thinkwell 15% off: http://thinkwellhomeschoo.refr.cc/lieslm  You can use whatever science resources/curriculum you would like to help you student/s better understand the material or to go a bit farther if they have questions.

What age is this unit for? We did this unit both during high school chemistry and high school biology.

Can I use a credit card to pay? Yes, here are details about how to do that without creating a PayPal account. I use PayPal as a secure method of payment. You will then get an email with your link from SendOwl (the automatic delivery system that I use).
