At the beginning of the semester, we will often do a social studies unit that is not directly tied to what we’re studying in history.  For example, we’ve started a new semester with some of these units. These are hyperlinks if you want to find out more:

• Where I Live Activity – This is an activity for younger kids to help them understand where they live from their galaxy, solar system, planet, continent, country, state, town, right down to their own home.
• World Facts: Do your kids know the 4 largest countries? Which countries have the most people? The longest river?
• Geographic Features, Landforms and Topographic Maps: Another time we covered geographic features and land forms (terms such as bay, gulf, sound, atoll, channel, strait, cape, mesa, butte and many more). We also covered the deserts of the world and some of the famous world landmarks. (This material was added to the World Facts Packet).
• Civics and Government: We have covered this material about every other year or so. We talked about the 3 Branches of Government, the Constitution & Bill of Rights, the Presidential Cabinet Positions, How a Bill becomes Law, Civics Review (symbols, landmarks), Federal vs. State Governments and more! We’ve done this unit fairly regularly because the kids often say they need to review the powers of each branch… like how old you have to be to run for Senate or President, who declares war, who has the power to levy and collect taxes, who nominates and appoints the Supreme Court Justices and so forth.
• U.S. Presidents Quick Study: Over the years, we have done some quick studies about some of the U.S. Presidents. We often do this around Presidents Day in February. One year we did a quick study of 14 well-known Presidents including Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Jackson, Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Wilson, Hoover, FDR, Truman, Eisenhower, JFK, George W. Bush and Trump.
• U.S. States and Capitals: One year when we were largely covering American History, the kids spent time learning the U.S. States and Capitals. We did it by region (which went along with our American history studies), starting with the Northeast and then moving to the Southeast, Midwest, Northwest and Southwest.
• World Leaders: We’ve talked about some of the current world leaders a number of times over the years. (This is a free packet.)
• Types of Government: We have also gone over some of the different types of world governments and societies. We have talked about terms like anarchy, monarchy, oligarchy, junta, parliamentary republic, democracy, fascism, totalitarianism, communism, etc. Since these terms can be confusing, this is something we have covered a number of times over the years. This is in the free World Leaders Packet.

Over our break, we were playing a trivia game that had you identify some famous people in history such as Florence Nightingale. Another card asked, who is Siddhartha Gautama more commonly known as (yes, the kids were able to answer that – Buddha! We spent time studying Ancient India last year!).

Anyway, since we have been spending the past couple of years on world history, I thought I would begin this semester with some famous Americans that they *should* know.  I purposely chose people that my kids probably wouldn’t be able to identify… which is why I chose Crispus Attucks, Benedict Arnold and Molly Pitcher rather than people like Paul Revere, Patrick Henry or Betsy Ross.

For the most part, I also chose people from a series that we have on hand.  I printed out the blank versions for my kids.  Each of my kids will do one page and then present it to the others.  Then, we’ll read the one (or two) page synopsis from these three books:

• 100 African-Americans Who Shaped American History
• 100 Women Who Shaped World History (Note: They also have 100 American Women Who Shaped American History)
• 100 Men Who Shaped World History

There are three options to choose from. There are blank pages where students can do their own research. There are fill-in-the-blank pages.
