Spelling Word Endings -le -el -al -il -ol -ile Word Sort, Games, and Activities

ED has been working on the /ul/ sound; word patterns and rules for words that end with le, el, al, il, ol, and ile.

  • le words: people, struggle, little, table, available, article, terrible, etc.
  • el words: level, model, hotel, travel, channel, fuel, novel, etc.
  • al words: local, sandal, general, material, hospital, animal, etc.
  • il words: until, pupil, civil, pencil, fossil, basil, etc.
  • ol words: control, alcohol, symbol, petrol, cholesterol, etc.
  • ile words: while, smile, missile, fragile, fertile, agile, etc.

I also made ED a number of game sets and activities for practicing these tricky spellings.

Spelling-Words-end-in le el il al ol ile Games and ActivitiesThere are 10 to 15 word cards for each of the rules (I gave some examples above). Plus, there is an additional sheet with some of the words used in All About Spelling (affiliate link) (the spelling program we have used for years).  The word list I put together includes some of the most common words used in each category.

My daughter used these cards with a sorting mat for the first couple of days.  Then we played rounds (and rounds!) of board games and bingo games with these words! Of course, you can use the spelling words that work best for your student. You don’t have to use them all!

L-sound le el al il ol ile - Games

Game Boards:

Each player needs a token to move around the board.
Place the spelling word cards face down in a pile.

How to Play:
One player picks up a card and reads the word aloud (without letting the other player read the card). The other player must identify the spelling rule (le, il, el, etc.). Once they have correctly identified the spelling rule he/she moves to the next available space on the board.
The player who just moved his/her piece then reads the next card aloud for the other player.
The first player to get to the end of the board and into the final space with one of the two spelling rules wins the game!

Bingo Cards: There are also 8 bingo cards. Players take turns reading a word aloud. Everyone covers one space with that spelling rule. Players try to be the first one to get five in a row. We usually laminate these cards and use a dry-erase marker so we can play round after round! 🙂

There are also some L-Sound Worksheets. Students write in the missing letters. Answer sheets are provided.

L-Sound Words - le el al il ol ile - Worksheets Activities and Games

This semester we have been using Spelling City quite a bit.  Here is a list of some of the words she did with L endings (I made the list public. Click on Play a Game.  Some of their games and activities are free so you can have your kids play around with it!). We actually purchased the full version because we use it so much in the fall. (Note: I’m not an affiliate for Spelling City, I just really enjoy this site!  I even made a few lists for my 9th grader to practice some of his SAT words!)

As many of you know, we have used (and loved) All About Spelling (affiliate link) for years!  ED (my youngest) is slowly making her way through the series. (My older two used this series as well!)

Level 6 goes into a lot of detail about the various /ul/ spellings.  It covers the spelling (lesson 12) CLE (lesson 13) CAL (lesson 14) IL (lesson 15) EL (lesson 16 & 17) AL (lesson 18) LE as well as the spelling IBLE and ABLE.

The spelling program we use:(proud affiliate for this amazing company)

We don’t tend to use the spelling tiles quite as often these days (ED just wants to get to the writing!) but I’ll put a picture of that in for those who aren’t familiar with AAS.  These days we tend to use spelling sorts and games as our manipulative these days… but during the first couple of years of the program all of my kids used the board. This program is really laid out logically and helped ME understand how words are put together and why! Eight thumbs up from the Homeschool Den (me and the 3 kids!!)
