Free Equivalent Fractions Packet! (Hearts-Theme or Plain)
My daughter is just starting to learn about equivalent fractions… learning that 1 is the same as 2/2, 3/3, etc. Today I want to share the fractions packet that I first used with my son years ago!
ED has done the basics with fractions (shading in fractions and adding fractions with the same denominator), but she is just diving into creating equivalent fractions — the first step to adding fractions with denominators that are not the same (ie. 1/2 + 1/3).
This is a free packet I made for my son years ago to really help him understand what he was doing and why. With Valentine’s Day coming up ED opted for some heart and butterfly clipart on her fraction worksheets! Both versions (the plain and the one with hearts/butterflies are available and free to download).
This packet progresses from changing 1/2 and 1/3 into an equivalent fraction then to 1/4, 1/5, 1/6, 1/7, 1/8, 1/9. By the time we get through these pages, doing the mixed problems (where she has to pay attention to the denominator) should be quite easy/straight forward.
Free Equivalent Fraction Packet Valentines Day – Hearts and Butterflies
We use this packet in conjunction with some fraction manipulatives that we have on hand:
Working with the manipulatives really helps visualize what is going on. Our plastic sets were made by Didax–Fraction Circle Manipulatives, but these by Learning Resources Deluxe Rainbow Fraction Circles (affiliate link) are a bit cheaper. Here’s a picture of what we were doing the first day, using our plastic fraction set. ED said she really loved having those because it helped her understand better. (Her first day, we went over the first couple of pages and a few of the 1/2 = ?/4 type problems.)
The plastic fraction set were worth purchasing since we have three kids, but you can also make them or print them off the web (such as these Fraction Circle Templates at Worksheet Fun or these Fraction Circles at DocStoc).
Above, ED split the circle into three sections and shaded one of those sections. Then she divided each of those into 4… showing that 1/3=4/12.
