Human Body Activities – Digestive System

We had an amazing time studying the Digestive System.  We did a whole range of hands-on activities from making our own epiglottis  to seeing how the digestive tract works (how nutrients pass through). We made “fake”vomit, measured out the length of the digestive system and more! I also made notebook for the kids as we went through this unit.

When our family studied the Digestive System again, we spent quite a bit of time learning about the small intestine; liver, gall bladder and pancreas; and the large intestine.  I added a dozen new pages to the packet.  You can choose either the fill-in-the-blank notebook pages or use these pages as supplementary readings (with no words missing!).

Here is a sample notebook page about the small intestine. On the left you can see the student fill-in-the-blank page. On the right is the full text version.  I would print the fill-in-the-blank page/s for my kids and then a full text version for myself. We would take turns reading and my kids would try to provide the missing answer. If they didn’t know, I would provide the answer from the full-text page. Answer pages are always provided both for notebook pages and for worksheets (such as a matching page).

There is also an entirely new section on fiber and vitamins. This was just an intro for my kids, so as we went over the information, they pasted the information onto the sheet. 🙂 I wanted them to become familiar with the vitamins & why they are important, but didn’t make them memorize this or anything! If your kids are in early elementary (Grades 1-3), I would probably just save this material for later.

Overview of the Human Body Systems

We started this unit with a fun album called the Human Body Rock (we borrowed it from the library, but it’s available at Amazon) that we listened to as we made our two trips to the doctors last week (for LD’s allergy shots). The first song goes over the body systems in a fun, general way and we used that as a spring-board for talking about all the systems.
