Free India Learning Packet

This year we are again studying world cultures in our homeschool. We are focusing on Asia and just started our unit on India.  I made a packet for the kids to add to their history notebooks which covers the geography of India, some basic facts (population, capital, etc.) and things like that. It’s 20 pages long and includes answers to the various sheets that the kids and I will be going over.

We are using a variety of resources along with our unit, we have about 15 or 20 books checked out from the libary and I’ll share those as we use the, but in the meantime here’s a rough schedule of readings I wrote up to follow in the next few weeks. We’ll be covering much of the history of India and will also do smaller units on Buddhism and Hinduism. We’ll be adding in other books and resources (like folktales, tales about Rama and Sita, books about Hinduism and Buddhism) as we go along. Here’s the rough outline of the history readings we’ll be doing. I’ll include that in case anyone else is doing a unit study on India — I just pulled readings from the resources I had on hand.

Books we’re using:

A Child’s History of the World (CHOW)

Story of the World (SOW)

Kingfisher History Enclyclopedia (Kingfisher)

Usborne Book of World History (Usborne)

World History Patterns of Civilization (WH-PoC) — This is a history textbook I still have on hand from my teaching days.

We did the first couple of history readings and a couple of the pages in the packet last week. We also pulled out an old pin-map I made of Asia and started learning the location of some of the countries. I got the Asia flags from Montessori Materials (free to download).  When I made this “pin map” I used Styrofoam (in a box so it wouldn’t disintegrate into those horrible balls!), a laminated map of Asia and attached the flags to toothpicks (normally I use straight pins now that my kids are older).
