German Worksheets (free) and Our Plans for Learning German this Semester

Last semester, we spent time reading simple stories together in German.  There are a couple of stories we downloaded from Amazon, Peter und das Huhn and Der Kartoffel-troll.  We read them aloud together and I had the kids do a few activities related to those stories. Peter und das Huhn ($0.99) is considerably easier than any of the stories in Der Kartoffeltroll ($1.50), but the kids enjoyed them both.

We still regularly read through some very cute  German readers  that I found over at carlscorner — by Cherry Carl. They have cute graphics and simple sentences — perfect for young, beginning German learners!!

This semester I don’t think we’ll have as much time to sit down and read together. I wanted some activities they could do on their own. I made an entire packet of German worksheets that I got (free) at chillola.com.  Most of the work they’ll do is review and simply entails writing/tracing over basic vocabulary.

Here are a couple of free German number worksheets that I made. These are free to download:

We’ll also be going over short dialogues. Here’s an example of one I made for the kids over the break. There’s nothing fancy about it, but if you’re interested you can download these German Conversation pages here. They are printed in dashed print so the kids write them out without too much pain or fuss.

German 101 (a paid website) has a lot of easy (and advanced) dialogues for German language learners. We keep toying with getting a subscription… maybe at some point in the future.

I also mentioned the other day that we’re going to try out a German langauge learning program while traveling in the car.  Just a few days ago we started in on Pimsleur German. The kids seem to like it so far.  The lessons are a bit long for my kids — each lesson is 30 minutes. I find that they do well for about 15 minutes and then I turn it off and switch to something else.  It explains in detail how to pronounce each word, but I like the fact that they are learning useful conversational phrases like “Entschuldigung Sie. (Excuse me.) Verstehen Sie Deutsch? (Do you understand German?) Nur ein bisschen. (Only a little)”  So far, I’m really happy with these CDs.

You may find LiveMocha or Busuu helpful as well. Both are free and are really great for learning languages.

Thanks Mindy! As it turns out, we’ve really only worked on German in the car this semester. (We’re having to go to the doctor’s twice a week for my son’s allergy shots — and so we’re spending a lot of time in the car as it’s a 30 minute drive each way.) I’ll keep these in mind for later, though. Thanks for mentioning them. I bet others might find these useful too.

Hi there! enjoyed reading your blog and appreciate you sharing your ideas. It can be quite a challenge finding good materials for kids. I hope you don’t mind a little correction from a native German speaker. It’s “Entschuldigen Sie” (-en ending), not “Entschuldigung Sie”. Entschuldigen is the verb, Entschuldigung is the noun 🙂
Thanks again for sharing. Have a great day. God bless you for homeschooling your kids! Renate

Thank you, Renate!! Of course I welcome the correction and appreciate it! As soon as you say that I know you’re right. 🙂
Thanks too for the links to islcollective. Others might want to follow that as well as this post gets quite a bit of traffic.
My sister also sent me a new link being created by someone trying to help with the refugee crisis in German (from what I understand) by creating materials for learning German. I hope to share those soon because they are another great resource for German language learners.
      Warmly,
      Liesl
