Monster Math Tag

If you have a break in the weather where you are, you might want to play Monster Math.  It’s just a racing version of freeze tag that I play with my kids. I came up with the fancy name for this game years ago.   They beg for me to get out and chase them down!

I take index cards and write down math problems. For ED (age 4) she has to identify the number. For DD (age 6) she had to do a subtraction problem. And for LD (age 8) he had to do a division problem.  Before we start the game, I distribute the cards far and wide across the yard (sometimes hiding them). You can’t tell from the picture, but each child’s cards are a different color.

How to Play:

I’m the monster chase them all around the yard trying to freeze them. They try to find one of their cards distributed (or hidden) around the yard.  If they managed to pick up a math problem and if they can answer the problem quickly then they are not frozen and I have to take the problem back to my base before chasing someone else. If they get the problem wrong, don’t answer quick enough, or if they have no card they’re frozen. They have to wait til someone unfreezes them. If the Math Monster manages to freeze them all, the Monster wins.

You know what’s amazing? I’ve been playing this for years and years and the Math Monster has never won! Better luck next time!

But then again, maybe I have because I manage to go over basic math facts again and again and again… in a very fun, energetic way!!!
